Abstract
Weather and climate forecast is an everlasting endeavor of human beings. Modern numerical weather and climate forecast combine atmospheric science with mathematics and physics. Supercomputers are utilized to predict the weather and climate by integrating the governing equations taken into account meteorological observational data. In this talk, we will provide a brief introduction to modern numerical weather and climate forecast, with a focus on the role played by various mathematics tools such as dynamical system, PDEs, stochastic PDEs, computational methods, and nonlinear optimization. We will also discuss the challenges and opportunities in the area.
