The first batch of national applied mathematics centers was officially announced by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) recently. Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) will host the Shenzhen Applied Mathematics Center (Center).
The Center is the city’s first national mathematics center and University’s first national scientific research platform. SUSTech, Shenzhen University (SZU), Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT)_of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) will jointly build the Center.
The construction of the Shenzhen Applied Mathematics Center is an important step to facilitate Shenzhen’s implementation of national strategy. The Shenzhen municipal government placed the Shenzhen Applied Mathematics Center as one of the city’s three major scientific research institutions to be built under the plan for 2020. Significant importance has been attached to the program, and policymakers at all levels across Shenzhen support SUSTech to build its mathematics discipline to the national level.
The Center will place its research foci on the application of mathematical disciplines and key technical issues that meet the major national strategic needs while supporting the industrial innovation of the Greater Bay Area and Shenzhen’s construction of a pioneering demonstration zone. It will develop into a technological application center integrating education, research, and industrial services.
During the first stage of construction, the Center plans to set up three laboratories, including the Modeling and Computational Research Lab in the Network Information System, the Modeling and Computational Research Lab in Precision Medical Applications, and the Modeling and Computational Research Lab in the Life Sciences, which mainly involve network information, research directions in precision medicine, computer and network mathematics, life sciences and big data.
