On December 21, National Center for Applied Mathematics Shenzhen (NaCAMS) was unveiled in SUSTech. Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen Yihuan WU, Vice-Inspector of the Guangdong Science and Technology Department Mutang ZHOU, Deputy Director of Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission Xuan QIU, SUSTech President Qikun XUE, former president Shiyi CHEN, and other senior leaders and scholars attended the unveiling ceremony.

In the future, the Center will focus on network information, precision medicine, scientific computing and software development, financial technology and digital economy. One of the Center’s primary missions is to cooperate with local enterprises in order to find solutions to common key industrial problems related to Shenzhen’s economic development.

During the ceremony, President XUE was appointed the Director of the Management Committee of NaCAMS, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences Gang TIAN as the Director of the Academic Committee of NaCAMS, Acting Vice President of SUSTech Fuquan FANG as the Chairman of the Committee of Directors, and Head of SUSTech Department of Mathematics Xiaoming WANG as the Executive Director of the Center.

XUE said the NaCAMS was unveiled on the day of SUSTech 10th anniversary, which is of great significance. The leading role played by SUSTech in the Center reflects the State’s full affirmation of the University. With the strong support of the State, the Province, and the City, SUSTech will strive to build the Center into a core engine for the development of mathematics, and a world-class mathematics center integrating mathematical application research and industrial services, so as to make contributions to the economic and industrial development of Shenzhen.

Gang TIAN said that Shenzhen has provided fertile soil for the research of Applied Mathematics. Mathematics is closely related to the application of technology, and the research-technology transfer is dependent on the exchange and cooperation of scientific, educational, and industrial communities. In recent years, the rapid growth of mathematics in SUSTech has laid a solid foundation for the development of the Center. He expressed his hope that the NaCAMS will dare to make innovations and write a new chapter in the development of Applied Mathematics in China.

Fuquan FANG expressed that the Center was established to satisfy the technological needs of enterprises. He hoped that the Center, with a focus on network information, promote large-scale computing and fast algorithm research together with Tencent and other well-known enterprises to empower Shenzhen’s economic development.

The NaCAMS is one of the first 13 national applied mathematics centers and the first national mathematics center in Shenzhen.
